Research
I research pedagogies and curricula of creative coding for artists in iterative cycles that move between teaching and researching. I believe in the unique capabilities that new technologies proffer, and am committed to designing learning experiences that support students’ personal, meaningful, and critical creative work.
My research since 2018 has explored how to teach creative coding. Using ethnographic methods and focusing on my own classes, I explore what happens when arts-based research methods are used to teach coding to artists.
In my dissertation I put forth a framework for supporting the creative side of creative coding: helping students wield code in the pursuit of their own dreams. The framework is connected to key arts-based research theories, including D’Adamo and Marshall’s Creative Research Stages and Project Zero’s Studio Habits of Mind.
