Sunset Pavilion
Wood, oscillating motors, custom LEDs
Lincoln Calling
May 2024
Sunset Pavilion is part of Midnight Prairie, an immersive environment I created for the music festival Lincoln Calling. I used wooden frame-like structures, white curtains, LED strip light, and various electronics to set the scene of a sunset pavilion on a wind-struck plain. The installation was located at the entrance of Lincoln Calling at 14th and O Street.
Sunset Pavilion is ~9' square, and built of a thick, modular wooden frame that is sturdy and transportable. From the frame hang curtains, which are attached to motors. The curtains dance, thanks to the motors, and the wind (depending on the day). The four posts will contain strips of LED that cast a sunset glow on the curtains.
The space is meant to be moved through, to feel the blowing sheets and watch the dancing light.
It is meant to recall a sunset gazebo, where the curtains are already dancing (so you don’t have to, if you don’t want to).
